you're reading...

Seldom did I there tread
that dark forbidding way
which leads from easy emptiness
to the garden of decay

A cherry tree old and forgotten
broods in that cold dark waste
and empty are its boughs of blossom
cold winds, their beauty erased

Arrived there now my true love
careless of garden’s plight
But like the sun her loveliness
brings warmth and life and light

And as our love, the blossoms grow
on cherry tree now proud
enveloping our wanton happiness
in fragrant, colourful shroud

Then passed by a glorious year
till my love said to me
to home must I now go
and never again you, I see

Now empty is the garden
which joy for me had kept.
But cherry tree lives there still
nourished on tears I’ve wept.
