SharePoint My Site “An unexpected error has occurred” after installing Cumulative Update

After installing the April 2014 Cumulative Update on our SharePoint 2010 farm (updating from Service Pack 2), when browsing to My Site we got the error “An unexpected error has occurred”

SharePoint My Site error
Error presented when My Site loads

Looking in the Windows event logs on the farm servers provided no information on this error, however looking in the SharePoint log files located at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS showed errors about not being able to open the Search_Service_Application database

SqlError: ‘Cannot open database “Search_Service_Application_DB_” requested by the login. The login failed.’
SqlError: ‘Login failed for user ‘domain\youruser’.’

Cause: From the December 2013 Cumulative Update, there has been a design change whereby search scopes are loaded together with the profile page.

To resolve this, see the Microsoft KB article and associated fix at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2970281

Below are the steps from the above KB article, in case it is taken offline/becomes unavailable

Add the “Full Control” permission for the My Site Application Pool account to the search databases, to do this:
1. Open SharePoint Central Administration
2. Click Manage Service Applications under the Application Management section
3. Select the Search Service Application, and then click Administrators in the ribbon
4. Add the account running the My Site application pool (it is listed in the error from the log file above) and give it the full control permission
