Enabling features on Windows Server 2012 R2

When I was trying to enable the .Net Framework 3.5 Features from server manager, I received the prompt “Do you need to specify an alternate source path? One or more installation selections are missing source files on the destination…”

I did the usual and clicked “Specify an alternate source path”, pointing to the installation media where the SxS folder was located, however the installation was still failing with the message “The source files could not be found”

It turns out that because we use a WSUS server to push our Windows updates, this was causing the feature installation to check there instead of the \sources\sxs directory I was specifying, causing it to fail

To work around this:

  1. On the server, open local group policy management console (gpedit.msc)
  2. Go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System
  3. Open Specify settings for optional component installation and component repair
  4. Select Enabled, and tick Contact Windows Update directly to download repair content instead of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)

This should now allow you to enable the feature. I would be recommended reverting the above once complete to comply with you organisations update policies
